I’m getting pretty excited about foldables these days. In a generation or two, I expect the formula to have been perfected, with devices that are slim and light, yet still manage to fit flagship specs. Isn’t that all someone should want when buying cutting-edge technology that costs nearly $2,000?
The Vivo X Fold 5 is coming out soon and will have a chance to advance the foldable formula a step further. It is already expected to be slimmer and lighter than its predecessor. And like the phone before it, it might come with a killer camera setup. Thanks to a major leak, we’ve gotten our best look so far at the upcoming foldable.
From Essentially All Angles, the Vivo X Fold 5 Looks Amazing

The Royole Flexpai was the first foldable, and despite one sequel, the company quickly fell off the map after forcing itself into the history books. These days, no smartphone company is making foldables and dealing in half-measures (well, maybe Samsung), so it is better that a player like Royole got weeded out quickly. For instance, the Vivo X Fold 3, which came out last year, was a good example of how great foldable cameras can be.
The Vivo X Fold 5 is coming to succeed that device, skipping over the number 4 thanks to tetraphobia, and it seems set to improve on what was already a solid formula. Thanks to Evan Blass on X, we’ve gotten a really solid look at the device’s design. No, this leak doesn’t come with anything spec-related, but that’s fine.
The Colorways for the Vivo X Fold 5 Might Be Confirmed

From all of the leaked images (and videos), we can see the X Fold 5 in three different colorways, and if you ask me, those will likely be the only three options for the device. Vivo covers the neutral colors and adds one that’s more vibrant, and that pretty much nails what people tend to look for. The color options will be:

Of course, they’re going to have fancy names, but for now, we don’t know those. I’m a big fan of the green variant, and if I were in line for the device, that’d be the one I’d opt for.
The X Fold 5 Will Be Very Light, It Seems
Some of the marketing videos for the X Fold 5 have leaked, and in those, we see a more playful side of the Chinese OEM. While it is clearly exaggerating in some of these videos, the company plays around to show how light the phone is going to be.
Apparently, it’ll be light enough for an ant to carry, light enough to land on a spider web without breaking through it, and light enough to flutter like a butterfly. The Vivo X Fold 3 weighed 219 grams. While I don’t expect the Vivo X Fold 5 to go sub-200g, we should see a notable weight reduction.
Thinness Can’t Be Compromised This Year
Of course, the X Fold 5 will be thinner than Vivo’s foldable last year, since slimness is one of the most critical metrics for foldables right now. Its predecessor was 4.7mm thin when unfolded, and I’m estimating that it might shave off half a millimeter at best. If it manages to do anything more than that, I’ll be shocked.
Vivo has said it will be the thinnest foldable released, so it has quite a bit of competition to surpass when it launches later this month.
Unfolded Thickness | |
Vivo X Fold 3 | 4.7mm |
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 | 5.6mm |
Oppo Find N5 | 4.2mm |
Honor Magic V3 | 4.4mm |
